SMILE DESIGN
WHAT IS A SMILE DESIGN?
Different from the concept we have in mind, a smile design is not just about "veneers". This is what marketing and bad advertising in dentistry has sold us. Smile design is about THE HARMONY OF THE SMILE. What does it consist of? It is a set of procedures to achieve the goal of having a healthy and beautiful smile. These procedures are based on science, where not only aesthetics matter, but also the stability and function of the teeth. When we talk about a set of procedures (orthodontics, leveling of gingival margins, teeth whitening, and veneers), it is a general term, not all patients need the same procedures, that's why each case is unique and particular.
We will provide three examples to better understand the concept:
Elderly patient, without any teeth, unable to eat properly, without lip support, and not smiling because of this reason. The "smile design" in this patient is to restore the function to their teeth, two complete dental prostheses, and now they can chew properly and smile with ease. That is the harmony of the smile.
Young patient with aligned teeth, good size, and shape, but with some staining on their teeth. What is their smile design? Teeth whitening, they don't need anything else.
Adult patient with small, triangular, irregular edges, misaligned, and crowded teeth. What is their smile design? Orthodontics, teeth whitening, leveling of gingival margins, and high esthetic resin or ceramic veneers.
With these examples, we conclude that not all patients need the same treatment, each case is unique, and in consultation, we will determine the appropriate treatment for your case. Next, we will show you some of the smile design procedures in images, we will see types of materials, characteristics, and advantages of each one.
ORTHODONTICS
TEETH WHITENING.
GINGIVAL MARGIN LEVELING.
VENEERS
Here you will find the characteristics of the two most commonly used materials for veneers, their advantages and disadvantages:
Porcelain veneers (lithium disilicate)
It is the gold standard in dentistry for aesthetic veneers. It is a beautiful material, crafted in the laboratory, baked layer by layer, stratified, where very natural results are achieved imitating the textures and effects of the tooth. It has a hardness similar to dental enamel, does not lose its shine, does not change color, and has a lifespan of 15-20 years.
An excellent material with which we can achieve beautiful results, it is versatile. In the office, we can directly create stratified veneers, but their disadvantage is that they tend to lose shine and change color over time, but this can be solved with proper maintenance. It is necessary to have maintenance every 4 months to polish and shine the surface to keep them looking perfect like the first day. The lifespan is about 5-6 years.

FAQ
"What is the cost of a smile design?"
The price depends on the procedures required by each patient, not all of us need the same procedures, and not always the same number of teeth are involved. To better understand this concept, I invite you to visit the "smile design" tab.
How often should I visit the dentist and why?
The recommendation is to have preventive check-ups and specialized cleanings twice a year, at least every 6 months, where we will review each tooth, remove dental calculus, and take care of your gums.
Does teeth whitening hurt and damage teeth?
It shouldn't hurt, and it's a myth that it wears down teeth (dental enamel). Safe teeth whitening, performed by a trained professional using the appropriate products for each patient, should not cause any pain, discomfort, sensitivity, or any type of wear.
How do I know if I am suitable for a smile design?
Each case must be studied individually, but in general, some considerations are: alterations in color, highly pigmented teeth, worn or fractured teeth, and small spaces between teeth.
They are restorations that aim to improve the appearance of the tooth, size, shape, and color. They are very thin and can be made directly or indirectly (in a laboratory) using different types of materials. In the "smile design" tab, I explain in detail the differences in materials, advantages, and disadvantages.
The teeth around the gap tend to shift their position to occupy the space left by the missing tooth. People who have lost a tooth also often have problems with their bite, gums, and a higher risk of cavities due to poor oral hygiene.
Do I have stains on my teeth, can they be improved?
There are several types of stains, such as those caused by lack of enamel mineralization, fluorosis, early-stage decay, or external agents such as coffee or cigarettes. Each type requires a specific treatment, but in any case, it is possible to improve them.
How long does the smile design process take?
It will depend on the procedures required for your particular case. Usually, it takes us three appointments plus a follow-up one. It's important to know that if you don't live in the city or country, we work at full speed to finish your smile design process in a maximum of one week.
Cosmetic dentistry is a branch of dentistry that focuses on improving the appearance of teeth and the smile of patients through different techniques and procedures.
No. We use appropriate materials and techniques for each patient that will not cause any sensitivity.
What types of orthodontic treatments do you offer?
We work with our specialist who handles all techniques, conventional orthodontics, aesthetic braces, mini-tubes (flow jack system), and invisible orthodontics (with aligners).
